Nikon Imaging Center (HMS)

Summary:

The mission of the NIC@HMS is to: enhance basic research by providing access to state-of-the-art microscopy and imaging equipment, provide training courses on basic and advanced light microscopy techniques for the benefit of HMS and the greater Boston research community, introduce the latest innovations in light microscopy and imaging to the HMS community, serve as a learning center for our corporate partners and contributions, and provide a dedicated NIC@HMS director for ongoing technical consultation and support.

      "Five PC computer workstations are available for image analysis. Each computer is equipped with Metamorph image analysis software and Microscoft Excel. NIS Elements image analysis software, AutoDeBlur deconvolution software and AutoVisualize-3D rendering software are available on most, but not all, of the computer workstations. Data may be accessed through the servers, external hard drive, CD, or DVD. These computers can also be used to download data from the servers to an external hard drive, CD or DVD."

      "The NIC's focus is to provide help with image acquisition. For help with image analysis, please contact the Image and Data Analysis Core.

      Five Windows PC computer workstations are available in the NIC for image processing and analysis:
      * One (1) computer with a 64-bit processor.
      * Four (4) computers with 32-bit processors.

      Software packages for image processing and analysis:

      * Metamorph image analysis software, including analysis modules (all computers).
      * NIS Elements image analysis software (4 computers, incl. the 64-bit workstation).
      * Autoquant AutoDeBlur deconvolution software (3 computers, incl. 64-bit processor).

      We have a CellASIC ONIX microfluidic perfusion system that can be used with most microscopes in the NIC. Users must purchase their own plates from CellASIC to use with the system.

    • Microscopy workshops/courses ( Training service )

      "A primary goal of the NIC@HMS is to provide training in basic and advanced light microscopy techniques. The NIC@HMS offers 1-day workshops that are open to members of academic or other non-profit institutions."

    • User-based microscopy service ( Access service )

      The Department of Cell Biology, the Department of Systems Biology and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology (BCMP) at Harvard Medical School subsidize use of the NIC@HMS by members of their departments. Members of these departments therefore have full access to the equipment with no hourly usage fees. The other basic science departments at Harvard Medical School have access to the equipment for a rate of $50 per hour. Prior to using a microscope in the NIC, all users meet with the NIC Director to discuss their imaging plans and decide on the appropriate equipment and approach. All users pay a one-time $200 fee to be trained by an NIC staff member to use a microscope in the NIC. After training, the NIC staff microscopy expertise and guidance continues to be available to all users at no additional charge.
